I agree Pete. Dan and I will have the "chat" with him.
I am pretty sure he will be cooperative.

I too thought Dan was referring to the "Psycho" from a few weeks ago. I
would never suggest calling the cops on Greg. He's a great guy and a
good rider although he does tend to take "liberties" traffic-wise. I
think if Sherry has a word with him about his antics being reported at
the shop, he'll back off. He may or may not pay attention to someone he
doesn't know.

Unfortunately, he's never at the start so he never hears of our "new"
emphasis on considerate and safe riding.

Dan, great idea. And thanks.
I did not ride the gravel road.
Ron Lablanc and I were on 96 (right before the lake) when the group
blasted by us.
I like Dan's idea in talking to Greg. I really do think he will be
approachable.
This hopefully will take care of Greg and his behavior, and hopefully
the other crazy guy is history.
Sherry

Sherry, this isn't the guy you are thinking of who you talked to several
weeks ago. The guy Martin is talking about is Greg (I don't know his
last name), who joins mid-ride, wears no helmet and wears socks over his
shoes. And this was the Tuesday ride that you and Charlie were on. The
ride started quite peacefull but then for some reason turned into a
race. It seemed to have started when Charlie pulled away on that
freshly graveled road (I thought that was a strange thing for Charlie to
do). The pace got fast after that and when Greg started playing
shake&bake on hwy 96 he goaded me into following him (which I shouldn't
have done). But when he cut in front of that van on Hwy 96 to get ahead
of everyone on that left turn off Hwy 96, I didn't even think about
following him (I went all the way to the intersection and waited to turn
after the van went by).

Anyway, I kind of know Greg, but not too well, and he doesn't talk much
but the next time I see him I'll talk to him about mellowing out on the
ride. I'll tell him some bad reports have come back to the shop and
that we need to improve our behavior. Hopefully this helps, but it
might be best to talk to him before taking any other action.

Martin/Sherry,

Since the guy has a legal right to ride the road, I don't see any way
to
prevent him from riding "with us". However, we can certainly phone the
cops during a ride, explain the situation, tell them our exact route,
and have them "catch him in the act" and ticket him. I think he'd stop
riding with us after that happened a few times. Or he'd at least begin
to ride legally (if not politely) while with the group.

What a strange situation! We've scratched our heads about the "crazy
guy", wondering what motivates him to show up on a ride where he's not
wanted. The guy definitely has something wrong upstairs.

Martin and GW members,
Thanks for sending this out. I was not on the ride last night. I
wonder if the guy you are describing has been on our ride before? It
sounds like from your email he has.
There is someone who has shown up over this season ( I don't know his
name) who is "crazy." I won't go into details regarding his behavior
but it might be the same guy you are speaking of. Dan wheeler and I
have both talked with him and I have asked him not to come back. I
have
not seen that guy for about a month.
I try to do the best I can to give a chat (which includes
rules/etiquette before we leave CC), and If I am not there, I hope
that
other members can do the same. As president of the club, I am not
sure
what I can do to prevent this sort of thing, besides expect that as
members of GW we don't tolerate such behavior and don't ride with
someone who is a "stupid" cyclist. I am open to any suggestions to
make
the ride safer for all of us. We have insurance for the ride, but
that
is only a small comfort.

Sherry,

Last nights ride had the makings of a great ride with a good group of
seasoned (read older) cyclists out for a nice paced ride. Then along
came
our unhelmeted and, after last nights ride, unwanted rider. Now I
don't
mind
the pace being amped up a bit but last night was one of the stupidest
displays of riding I have had the pleasure to be part of in a while.
While
going up 96 he proceeded to crank up the pace (OK) but then swerved
all
over
the highway, and I mean the shoulder and the driving lane like the
world
championship sprint on a closed road. He had proceeded this by running
(some
would say anticipating) the red light crossing 61. He dove in front of
a
van
to get onto Otter Lake Rd. and our young purple-shirted friend
attempted
to
follow but had to go behind the van. I was so disgusted with the ride
at
this point, I left the group and went home by myself up 96. I think a
lot of
the others let these two go. This guy has got to stop hijacking the
rides
and then disobeying every street and club rule (including the wearing
of
helmets on the ride). The club will eventually pay dearly for it and
I'm
pretty sure Ron and Marty don't want it coming back to the shop. As
president of this club, I am requesting that you do something about
this
problem. This is not the first time this has been brought up. I've
ridden
with other clubs and have not seen this kind of flaunting of the rules
and
etiquette of the rides.

Martin Lacey
